It’s only been two weeks since #GauleyFest and I’m already ready for next year.

Twelve days of non-stop GO followed immediately by three night shifts in the ER did a number on me I tell ya. I’ve been under the weather all week and beating myself up for spending most of peak fall foliage week in Vermont in bed sleeping off a sinus infection and fatigue that settled into my bones. After three days of vegetation I absolutely HAD to get out of the camper, but I didn’t have the energy for a big hike. I decided to do a fall foliage drive and hit a couple of farrrrrrr north waterfalls along the way.

Staying in a fire tower has long been a dream of mine. This dream finally became a reality when Red Oak Fire Tower in Monongahela National Forest opened for camping reservations! I’ve been waiting for this tower to open for four years, since the first time I hiked to it in 2022. So when reservations opened a couple weeks ago, I quickly snagged a night for some friends and I.

Last night’s shift wrapped up thirteen weeks in the Green Mountain State! This has honestly been one of my favorite contract locations to date and I can’t believe how quickly it has passed. I absolutely love the hardy, kind people that call Vermont home. I love how rural the entire state feels, covered in lush forests and fertile farmland. I adore the quaint little towns. I find it charming that “grocery stores” here are mostly little mom ‘n’ pop general stores and nearly everyone lives in old, historical, well-loved homes. There’s an endless variety of outdoor adventures to be had. It has been a lovely place to call home for a summer, even if I am going into Mexican food withdrawals and have been running my heater since mid-August.

After a jam packed couple of hiking days in the White Mountains, I rounded out my final stretch of days off on this contract by attending @vtcanoeandkayak’s Labor Day Floatapalooza. As you know if you’ve followed my griping for the last several weeks, you know I’ve been sorely disappointed with how little I’ve been able to get out on the water. The weather FINALLY cooperated Sunday and I went out on the Lamoille River with a huge group of folks to send off the summer.

Y’all please don’t make me do trending reels for engagement 😅. You truly have no idea how much I loathe that this is what Instagram has become.
